Shri Baburao Kulkarni

The family tree of Shri Baburao Kulkarni can be traced up to 14 generation back up to one Shri.Udupanna Kulkarni. 7 generation later Shri Subbaji Kulkarni received Mantrakshate from Shri Shri Gurusarvabhouma Raghavendra Swamiji and became disciple of his Mutt. By profession they were Kulkarnis (Village Accountant). The descendents of Shri Subbaji were very religious and were Metaphysically oriented in Vaishnav darelexue and were sadhakas. All of them were deeply interested in sadhane and their minds were centered on Jnana, Bhakti & Vairagya. Thus the family became traditionally religious & sadhakas, after becoming devotees & disciples of Shri Guru Raghavendra and they entirely surrendered to him.

Grand father of Babanna Shri Ramachandra(1870- 1910) had immense faith in Gururaja. All his life he did Ashtottara of Sri Guru Raghavendra Stotra. It is said of Sri Guru Raghavendra Swamiji talked to him. He had 3 wives. The first two died very young. He then did seva of Sri Guru Raghavendra Swamiji who blessed him in dream with Mangalsutra & Mantrakshate and ordered him to marry his Paternal Aunt's daughter. She was only 11 years of age and he was 38. When he was worried about begetting children again Shri Raghavendra Swamiji blessed him with Coconut, Rose, Betelnut & Mantrakshate in dreams. The elders of the town explained the meaning of this dream, that there were 3 children only (coconut) one may survive long. This son of Ramachandra was named Raghavendra (1900-1966).

He was also devoted to Shri Raghavendra Swamiji. He was a great sadhaka but spoke very little. He used to say that one should not show his Adhyatma-Pragati to others and keep it himself. He should behave like ordinary common man in society while at heart he must be devoted sadhaka and should not tell his personnel adhyatmik progress to others. Raghavendra did not have issues from his first wife hence married second time. However once again doing Shri Raghavendra Swamiji seva Babanna was born after 6 years of marriage. Babanna was weakling and had severe difficulty in breathing (? Pneumonia). When he was just 6 months old. His father prayed to Shri Raghavendra Swamiji that if he saved life of his son he would dedicate the child to him. Within short time Babanna started breathing normally. From that onwards Babanna's life was dedicated to Seva of Shri Ragahavendra Swamiji. This is he first important stage of Babanna's life.

Babanna spent his childhood in Laxmeshwara. He had his primary and secondary education in Laxmeshwar & later in Dharwad. He studied for one year in First year science & 6 months in Ayurveda in Hyderabad but could not complete the course.

From the age of 18 he started doing seva at Raghavendra Swamiji Mutt Lakshmeshwar during Aradhane, festival day and every Thursday. The priest once brought and distributed the book of Raghavendra Swamiji's Guru Stotra. He too received one and made it byheart later he developed interest in learning other stotras and mantras.

There was sudden turn in his Adhyatmic life when he went to Mantralayam for the first time in 1953 & vowed in front of Raghavendra Swamiji's Vrindavan that next time he will visit Mantralayam by "Padayatra" from Laxmeshwar & prayed him for his blessings

Though his thread ceremony was performed at the age of seven he spent more time in playfulness.

He discussed the plan of Padayatra to Mantralayam with his friend at Laxmeshwar, they discouraged him & though he tried to convince them of Padayatra could not materialise. All his friends chided him. In 1958 he decided to undertake Padayatra alone. But Raghavendra Swamiji appeared in his dream & told him not to undertake Yatra then.

However in 1959 he setout on Padayatra along with 5 friends. They traveled by unknown route through Jungle, sometimes without sleep, sometimes without food, crossing river in full stream with Crocodiles and reached Mantralayam after 11days and took Darshan of Shri Raghavendra Swamiji & did Seva.

To avoid Dwitiya vighna (second vighna) Babanna and his friends undertook Padayatra in 1960 also & continued the yatra in coming years. They had wonderful experiences and fruits of this Padayatra. Encouraged by this they decided to conclude after 12 years of Padayatra.

However with the Blessings of Hari Vayu Guru the group decided to undertake paadayatra as long as they were fit to walk. Thus Mantralaya Padayatra Sangha was born. It has been growing and carrying on Yatra every year up to now (42 years). Thus total strength of members has increased from original 6 members to 3to 400 at present. Yatrikas from Dharwad, Kittur, Banglore and many other places also have joined this Sangha since last 10 years.

Babanna had visited family deity Lord Mailarlingha and Hosaritti-Shri Dheerendra Swammiji's Vrindavana by "Foot" earlier before to his Yatra to Mantralayam and then obtained their blessings. Babanna's parents had encouraged activities when they came to know about Babanna's vow to undertake Padayatra to Mantralayam & blessed him and their friends.

Archak Shri Venkannacharya of Moola Vrindavan of Raghavendra Swamiji at Mantralayam became great friend of Babanna after his 1st visit and influenced life of Babanna very much. He instructed Babanna the details of how to do seva of Raghavendra Swamiji & how to recite & Guru Raghavendra Stotra & its meaning and some secret meanings of the Mantras.

Babanna continued his Ayurveda apprenticeship under the guidance of Vaidya Hanumanthappa Murgod who used to visit his father often. Shri Hanumantappa Murgod encouraged Babanna to undertake study of Ayurvedic texts and taught how to prepare various Ayurvedic medicines. His assocition with Babanna was for 24 years of which last 12 years he stayed with Babanna. He was very experienced Ayurvedic Physician who had gone round the country to study. He had acquired siddhis of diagnosing the diseases by face reading, Voice reading, from dreams & from footprints of patient's etc. Vaidya Shri Hanumantappa Murgod cured diseases, which were not cured by allopathic drugs. He was not educated in tradition school but he knew five languages & was expert in Ayurveda.

Babanna having benefited by his training and association of Vaidya Shri Hanumantappa Murgod researched on his own to develop Ayurvedic medicine to cure Asthma. In this he had guidance of his Guru, who was distressed by death of his relatives due to Asthma.

This medicine is a mass treatment & hence in 1964 Babanna arranged First Asthma Yagna at Laxmeshwar, by the blessings of Raghavendra Swamiji. He researched & improved the medicine by his efforts and success of medicine has encouraged the sufferers of Asthma to come to Laxmeshwar to receive the medicine in thousands every year on the muhurt of when the Sun enters Mrigashira Nakshatra in June every year.

Shri Babanna contacted local Vaidya's; Himalayan saints and experimented to improve his medicine, which has become very effective for the past 5-6 years.

Shri Sujayeendra Theerth Swamy of Raghavendra Swamy Mutt Mantralayam gave Gurupadesh to him in 1964. One of the mantra was Shri Raghavendra Ashtakshara Maha Mantra. For number of years he practiced the mantra and later taught the mantra to his colleague Yatrikas.

With these yatrikas participation 11 Crore Japa of Shri Raghavendra Ashtakshara Maha Mantra was completed and function was organised at Dharwad in 1995 for Poornahuti along with Jnanasatra & Theertaprasada under the guidance of Shri Shri 108 Shri Vishwesh Teertha Swamiji of Pejawar Mutt Udupi.

Encouraged by this, In 1997 a vow was made by Vaidya Guru Shri Baburao Kulkarni on behalf of Mantralaya Padayatra Sangha to complete 108 Crore Japa of Shri Raghavendra Ashtakahara Maha Mantra on the auspicious day of Deepavali in front of Vrindavan of Shri Raghavendra Swamiji. This vow is completed after 3 years with the blessings of Shri Raghavendra Swamiji & about 5000 Bhaktas have participated in this event.
